Project Ireland 2040 plan commits €22 million to the Crawford Art Gallery over the period 2018 to 2027. The Chair of the board of the Gallery, Rose McHugh warmly welcomed the Government’s announcement at the National Gallery today “Investment of this scale in the National Cultural Infrastructure demonstrates Governments commitment to the role of Culture in society. The Crawford Art Gallery has been very resilient over the last number of years in the face of limited available resources. This investment will support the transformation of the Crawford Art Gallery to meet the expectations of our visitors and artists and will enable it to take its place as a significant National Cultural Institution, that is locally relevant and nationally and internationally connected”.
This inclusion in the National Development Plan 2040 signals new opportunities and significant confidence in the Crawford Art Gallery. It is the largest single refurbishment project in the history of the Gallery. The initial €4 million of the investment is earmarked for use over the period 2018–2021 to enable the Gallery to make immediate infrastructural improvements. From 2021–2027, the remaining €18 million will enable an expansion and reconfiguration of spaces for storage, new exhibition and project spaces, education and learning areas as well as administration and enhanced public spaces.
Mary McCarthy, the recently appointed Director welcomes the announcement and the possibilities it creates for Crawford Art Gallery, ‘to renew its purpose and mission in its extraordinary Cork City Centre site.
Cork is expected to see unprecedented growth over the next ten years and Crawford Art Gallery intends to contribute to that growth and be a dynamic place to connect audiences, artists and communities of interest. We look forward to collaborating with the arts community and other sectors in Cork and in the region, as well as with our national colleagues in the National Cultural Institutions to ensure Crawford (Art Gallery) is well prepared for future generations of artists and publics.’
