Councillor Pádraig O’Sullivan has cautiously welcomed the Little Island Traffic and Transportation Study, which was presented to Cork County Council members yesterday.
However, the Fianna Fáil councillor argues that the number of employees working on Little Island is far more than the figure Cork County Council has reported.
“Cork County Council maintain that approximately 8500 employees currently work in Little Island, while other organisations such as Cork Chamber and the Little Island Business Association estimate this figure is in excess of 15,000” said Councillor O’Sullivan. “In order for this study to have any chance at being implementable, accuracy around this figure is absolutely crucial.”
While Councillor O’Sullivan expressed his concern at this disparity in the figures, he reluctantly voted to allow the transportation strategy to proceed on the basis that Cork County Council will undertake a full assessment of the exact number of employees working in Little Island.
Councillor O’Sullivan also secured an undertaking from Cork County Council that it will examine feasibility into a third entrance to Little Island.
“Now that the plan has been allowed go forward, it gives Cork County Council the opportunity to apply to the NTA for funding” added the Councillor for the Cobh Municipal Area. “However, I remain concerned with elements of the study, and will continue to petition for improvements and amendments, to ensure that the result is suited not simply to motorists but to all road users.”
