Le Cheile Africa’s Avocado Farm
In 1985, inspired by Live Aid, Cork Native Derry Desmond Cork native Derry Desmond dreamed of making a difference. Today, alongside his Kenyan-born wife, Mary Kigo, he is transforming lives through Le Cheile Africa, an NGO dedicated to self-sufficiency, education, and healthcare in Solai, Kenya.
Their latest initiative, the Le Cheile Africa Organic Avocado Community Orchard, is set to empower hundreds of families by providing them with a sustainable income through avocado farming.
A Pathway to Financial Independence
The project will start by equipping 100 families with 25 avocado seedlings each, expanding to 500 families, ultimately benefiting over 9,000 people. By year three, each family will earn approximately 70,000 Ksh (€650) annually, equaling a full year’s wage in rural Kenya. Since avocado trees can produce fruit for over 50 years, this initiative ensures long-term financial security.
Beyond economic benefits, the project also supports environmental sustainability, with each family receiving 10 native tree seedlings to aid reforestation. Families will receive training and ongoing support, ensuring the success of their orchards.
Community-Driven, Market-Secured Initiative
Le Cheile Africa has already built clean water systems, schools, medical clinics, and a refuge for women escaping domestic violence. Now, through strategic partnerships, this project guarantees a ready market for the avocados, removing a major barrier for small farmers.
The initiative is made possible with the support of Irish businesses, including Zeus Packaging, Musgraves, and Donnelly’s, ensuring both local and export market access. Their contributions are helping turn this project into a game-changer for the community.
