This pocket book is my beacon of HOPE
‘Life is a journey for all of us, mine has been filled with doubt, lack of self-belief, mental and physical abuse which led to many forms of addictions.
I have battled addictions on an ongoing basis through homelessness and mental health.
I became homeless in 2011 due to personal issues and I really couldn’t see any light ahead. But one word stuck with me… Hope.
I clung to hope and as my life improved I started to volunteer and become immersed in the issues of homelessness.
Before my Mum passed away in January 2020 I made a pledge that I would make her proud and live the best life I could.
I have gone from sleeping rough to giving Ted Talks, appearing on the Late Late Show & Nationwide.
‘Memories & Hope’ is my pocket book of thoughts that have helped me and continue to help me through my ups and downs. This little book is a huge step forward for me and my hope is that it will help others on a similar path. I have written this for my mother.’
… Bernard O’Hehir
Bernard was born in Sligo under the commanding spires of the cathedral church. One would imagin you’d feel a sense of safety, security in the beautiful seaside town where WB Yeats wrote some of his finest work. But behind the brightly painted terraced doors were a variety of stories, some not as idyllic as they appeared.
Despite the warm love of his mother and siblings Bernard experienced abuse which inevitably shaped his teenage years and future.
He left Sligo in 2011 and headed as far south as he possibly could, to Cork. The southern city had a draw for him as his mother came from a small village on the outskirts so heading for Cork was like a greater search for a sense of home, a place to fit in and where he felt he could belong.
His struggle continued as he was faced with homelessness and the trials that accompany this lifestyle. Addiction and mental health go hand in hand and Bernard continues to fight these aspects of life with great courage and inner strength.
Mental health leads to the inability to engage in full time employment so with the desire to create a better life hand in hand with the wish to help others on a similar journey Bernard wrote ‘Memories & Hopes’ with the experience and help of a few friends.
